Archaeology

I work regularly in the field of experimental archaeology, where my main area of focus is prehistoric metalworking technology. I am involved with Umha Aois, an interdisciplinary team of artists and archaeologists, who meet regularly to explore the skills and techniques involved in ancient bronze casting. Along with other members of Umha Aois, I have spent the last few years making reproductions of ancient musical instruments. More about that on the Music page.

In late 2023, I (re)discovered the location of a wedge tomb, known locally as Altóir na Gréine (Altar of the Sun) that was considered lost since 1852. Its location had been forgotten after a report of its supposed destruction, but I was able to determine the site of what remains of it on a hill above Baile an Fheirtéaraigh in West Kerry. The story garnered some national and international attention, and was picked up by the press. You can read about the story by Seán Mac an tSíthigh on the RTÉ website here, and on the Guardian here.

I  work with the Irish Fieldschool of Prehistoric Archaeology, where we run courses for students on experimental archaeology during the summer.

I also had the privilege of working with the amazing Pallasboy Vessel Project, where I made tools for their exploration of ancient woodworking.
